Big Rock Shingon Temple

Big Rock Shingon Temple

Founded in 725, this is the headquarters for the Shingon Mitsu-shu Buddhist sect in the Hokoriku area. In this mountain temple for the esoteric Shingon tradition, the entire back wall of the main building is an enormous boulder on which a large figure of Fudo, the guardian god of fire, has been carved. This has been designated a National Cultural Property by the National Government of Japan. The local mountain stream has been diverted to cascade over stone walls in a series of water columns, under which practitioners can stand to chant while the cold waters beat down from above.
